Kiyosumi 3-3-9
80,000 sq m and thousands of selected trees and rocks in and around the pond form Kiyosumi Gardens 清澄庭園, one of the nicest gardens in East Tokyo. Donated in 1932 by the Iwasaki family, founder of the Mitsubishi group, who had purchased the land after the Meiji restoration. The garden served as reconstruction yards following WWII -when its original buildings were mostly destroyed by fire- and was restored years after.
With just 150 yen one gets to enjoy the pleasant stroll around the pond and three islands, only one of them reachable with a bridge. The teahouse and the reconstructed Taisho Memorial Hall can be used if rented in advance; perfect settings for a civilized party.
At the very back and out of the beaten path, a monumental stone for the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho 松尾芭蕉.
Located three minutes or so from the Kiyosumi-Shirakawa subway station. Kiyosumi Park is right next to the West of the Gardens.
